As the pool pump circulates the swimming pool's water, the water drawn from the pool passes through a filter and the heat pump heater. The heat pump heater has a fan that draws in the outside air and directs it over the evaporator coil. Liquid refrigerant within the evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the outside air and becomes a gas. The warm gas in the coil then passes through the compressor. The compressor increases the heat, creating a very hot gas that then passes through the condenser. The condenser transfers the heat from the hot gas to the cooler pool water circulating through the heater. The heated water then returns to the pool. The hot gas, as it flows through the condenser coil, returns to liquid form and back to the evaporator, where the whole process begins again.
Industrial chillers are used for controlled cooling of products, mechanisms and factory machinery in a wide range of industries. They are often used in the plastic industries, injection and blow molding, metal working cutting oils, welding equipment, die-casting and machine tooling, chemical processing, pharmaceutical formulation, food and beverage processing, paper and cement processing, vacuum systems, X-ray diffraction, power supplies and power generation stations, analytical equipment, semiconductors, compressed air and gas cooling. They are also used to cool high-heat specialized items such as MRI machines and lasers, and in hospitals, hotels and campuses.

Air-cooled chillers are similar to water-cooled chillers. Both are refrigeration systems that are common in mechanical industries. They both use the same basic principles to generate cooling power, but they use different substances to cool the condensers. Air-cooled chillers do this with the use of air.

Air-cooled chillers use evaporators to absorb heat from chilled water circling the bundle, according to Cooling Technology, Inc. The vapor provided by this process is taken away by the compressor and then pushed into the condenser, which pressurizes and heats it. The vapor is then condensed once more and gives its heat up to the air. Once the liquid refrigerant is highly pressurized and cooled, it passes an expansion device that further reduces its temperature. Finally, the refrigerant passes over cooled water coils.

These types of set-ups are found in primarily industrial settings. They are often used in large equipment rooms where they can cool down overheated systems.

AIR COOLED Vs WATER COOLED CHILLERS:

???Initial cost of air cooled chillers is lower than water cooled chillers as air cooled systems don’t require cooling towers, condenser water pumps and associated HVAC components.
???Small systems are almost always air-cooled since the extra requirements of water treatment and maintenance are capital intensive and will not be offset quickly by the lower operating costs. Larger HVAC water chillers are almost always water cooled .HVAC engineers and technicians feel easy with maintenance free or less maintenance equipment.
???Water cooled chillers may be preferred because of better heat transfer properties of water as compared to air cooled chillers. The primary advantage of water is that the film coefficient is 10-100 times better with water than air. Film coefficient controls heat transfer with given constant area and temperature difference.
???Water-cooled HVAC units make less noise and give more cooling per square foot. While air cooled chillers have comparatively less cooling per square foot and are more noisy HVAC machines. Noisy machines are annoying especially for occupants of nearest offices or zones.
???While comparing air and water cooled chillers, an overall system cost (both running and installed) has to be worked out. Size of HVAC unit matters when selecting the water cooled chiller or air cooled chiller. Smaller HVAC units are usually air cooled, larger are water cooled.
???HVAC engineers have to evaluate air cooled and water cooled chillers keeping in mind various factors. Refrigeration engineer has to consider the ambient conditions (wet bulb and dry bulb), number of hours of operation, part load pattern and cost of maintenance etc.
Water chillers are backbone of HVAC cooling systems.Water chiller is a refrigeration machine which produces chilled water ( Approx 7 Degree C ~ 12 Degree C).The primary function of a chiller is to lower the temperature of water to such value such that it can be used for producing cooling effect in integration with other HVAC components. A water chiller is just like a other refrigerator machine but instead of keeping your food cool or making ice,it produces chilled water.The output of chiller is a water at lower temperature usually around about 10 o C depending upon the Chiller design.

Water chillers play vital role in any HVAC systems along with other basic components. Chillers have got much attention in recent years for its new designs and performance improvement in existing designs. New designs have resulted in HVAC chiller with better efficiency and less operation and maintenance costs. Another desirable features is energy saving and precise load or capacity control for new chillers. We see the chillers with above features in market but as engineering professionals we hope to see more with design improvements with less O & M cost. It is essential part of HVAC system to have a chiller. Chiller manufacturers have also expanded their production as well design capabilities to cater to the diversified demands of HVAC chillers.

Decentralized chillers are usually small in size and cooling capacity, usually from 0.2 to 10 short tons (0.179 to 8.929 long tons; 0.181 to 9.072 t). Centralized chillers generally have capacities ranging from ten tons to hundreds or thousands of tons.

Chilled water is used to cool and dehumidify air in mid- to large-size commercial, industrial, and institutional (CII) facilities. Water chillers can be water-cooled, air-cooled, or evaporatively cooled. Water-cooled chillers incorporate the use of cooling towers which improve the chillers' thermodynamic effectiveness as compared to air-cooled chillers. This is due to heat rejection at or near the air's wet-bulb temperature rather than the higher, sometimes much higher, dry-bulb
Anodizing is one of the most common surface treatments of aluminium. In all anodizing processes, the basic reaction is conversion of the aluminium surface to aluminium oxide. The aluminium part, when made anodic in an electrolytic cell, causes the oxide layer to become thicker, leading to better corrosion and wear resistance. For decorative purposes, the oxide layer formed on the surface can be dyed.
There are several types of electrolytic ally formed anodic coatings. The basic classifications for MIL-A-8625 are:
Type I—Chromic acid anodizing: Conventional coatings formed from a chromic acid bath. Chromic anodize coatings are principally used for aerospace applications requiring corrosion resistance and good paint adhesion.
Type II—Sulphuric acid anodizing: Conventional coatings formed from a sulphuric acid bath. Sulphuric anodizing is the most commonly used and most suitable process for colouring.
Type III—Hard coat anodizing: Low-temperature bath and higher current densities to produce thicker coatings, which provide greater wear and abrasion-resistant surfaces. Type III anodize finishes can be dyed or non-dyed.
Type II Anodizing
Sulphuric anodizing is the most common method of anodizing, utilizing sulphuric acid to yield coatings up to 1 mil (25 microns) thick. 67% penetration into the substrate and 33% growth over original dimensions occurs. Due to its permeable nature, sulphuric anodizing is excellent for colour dyeing and provides a base for primers, bonding agents and organic coatings. Sulphuric anodizing provides corrosion resistance and is very durable. Typical applications include architecture, aerospace, manufacturing automotive and computers.

Type III Anodizing

Hard anodizing (a.k.a. hard coating) utilizes a higher concentration sulphuric acid electrolyte at a lower temperature resulting in a tough outer skin with excellent abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, colour fade resistance, dielectric strength and surface hardness (Rockwell C-Scale up to 70). 50% penetration into the substrate and 50% growth over original dimensions occurs for a total thickness of 0.5 to 4 mils. Hard anodized metals have heightened surface roughness. Common uses include non-decorative food packing equipment, photocopier paper rolls, and exterior applications such as building storefronts and windows.

Air-cooled and evaporatively cooled chillers are intended for outdoor installation and operation. Air-cooled machines are directly cooled by ambient air being mechanically circulated directly through the machine's condenser coil to expel heat to the atmosphere. Evaporatively cooled machines are similar, except they implement a mist of water over the condenser coil to aid in condenser cooling, making the machine more efficient than a traditional air-cooled machine. No remote cooling tower is typically required with either of these types of packaged air-cooled or evaporatively cooled chillers.

A heat pump is an electrical device that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another. The heat pump is not a new technology; it has been used in Canada and around the world for decades. Refrigerators and air conditioners are both common examples of this technology.

Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating a substance called a refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. A compressor pumps the refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In one coil, the refrigerant is evaporated at low pressure and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed en route to the other coil, where it condenses at high pressure. At this point, it releases the heat it absorbed earlier in the cycle.

Refrigerators and air conditioners are both examples of heat pumps operating only in the cooling mode. A refrigerator is essentially an insulated box with a heat pump system connected to it. The evaporator coil is located inside the box, usually in the freezer compartment. Heat is absorbed from this location and transferred outside, usually behind or underneath the unit where the condenser coil is located. Similarly, an air conditioner transfers heat from inside a house to the outdoors.

The heat pump cycle is fully reversible, and heat pumps can provide year-round climate control for your home – heating in winter and cooling and dehumidifying in summer. Since the ground and air outside always contain some heat, a heat pump can supply heat to a house even on cold winter days. In fact, air at –18°C contains about 85 percent of the heat it contained at 21°C.
